Can you trust a dating site?

Dating sites have been around since the beginning of the internet and it's no small wonder that they have become one of the most viewed websites on the internet on a daily basis. Their popularity is a testament to those who have used these dating sites and recommended them to their friends and families.
As many as 1 in 5 of us have used a dating site at some point. Many around the world have trusted these sites and with good reason too. However, saying that all dating sites can be trusted would not be wise. There is fraud and danger everywhere in the world and the internet is no exception.
How can you trust the dating site you wish to join? You need to look at the site and ask your self if this website looks professionally made or is it clumsily put together, but remember that appearances can be deceiving so do not put too much faith in just how the site appears. Next, you will need to view the contact page and see if there is an actual physical address listed for the company and not some P.O. box. Also keep an eye out for landline contact numbers and not mobile numbers. Make sure that it is in fact a real company and not just some individual who has access to your details.
You can also check the security of the website by the page you go to when you wish to pay. This page should be encrypted. If it is encrypted then you will see https://www in the address bar, notice the 's' after the http. You may also notice a small padlock symbol on the bottom right of the internet page. This all signifies that this page you are entering your credit card information on is encrypted. Be sure to check the company that is handling payment, which could be Paypal, Netbanx, Nochex, etc.
Checking the search functions on a dating site is very important. You can see how many members there are on the website but also can view the profiles and see just what type of people are joining this site. Are they professional, young, older, from overseas, etc. When you do join one of these dating sites, becareful as there are many fraudulent members out there who fool even dating website owners. These bogus members are there to trick you into giving them details online, or even to meet them overseas from the country they are from. This can be very dangerous. Keep clear of those that are from countries other than yours.
To see how long the website has been running for visit this page: http://www.archive.org, and fill in the section called 'wayback machine' with the dating sites website address. If the website had been running for a number of years then it would appear that it has to be at least somewhat successful and would prove it was not a fly by night website.
Remember, never give out your personal details to someone until you are 110% sure they are who they say they are. If you are going to meet someone from the internet then make sure to tell someone where you are going, your contact number, who you are going to meet, and what time you would be back to let them know. People have a tendency to exaggerate on their profiles, some more than others do. Don't expect everyone to be as truthful as you.
